This was the first time that I'd ever seen a mother mountain lion, her kitten, and a male lion together. This was the mother mountain who had a litter of three kittens. Two had disappeared. The one who was still with her had something wrong with his hind end as you'll see in this video when his hind end falls over. I suspect that he was overstaying his time with his mother because hunting on his own was too difficult.
There are both high pitched and low growling vocalizing. Which lion do you think is making each of those sounds and who are they directed at?

ReplyDeleteThis was fascinating, KB. It's amazing that the kitten has/had survived at least 8 months despite his disability, and looks in good condition here. A good mama! The male was not overtly hostile to the kitten. The kitten was remarkably unconcerned. The female was initially agonistic to the male, then her body language relaxed. And who was she growling at, as you ask? And what happened next...? So many questions!
