Colorado's Sole Lighthouse

My favorite part of Colorado is the mountains. I enjoy them every single day.
Shyla and I love playing in full view of the Continental Divide.

I do occasionally miss the ocean, living in land-locked Colorado means that the seaside Labrador romps of our earlier life don't happen. I also thought that we had no lighthouses since we have no coast. I was wrong.

Because today is National Lighthouse Day (much to the delight of Madi and her Mom), I decided on a whim to google whether Colorado has any Lighthouses. Believe it or not, we do! It's by a large reservoir and is the highest lighthouse in the country, sitting at 9017 feet above sea level. It is actually used for navigation on the reservoir. I've never seen it with my own eyes but here is a photo from the web.
I learn something new every day!

  1. oh this is such a wonderful little lighthouse... I would love it as my mom-cave ;O)

  2. Hari OM
Oh that is a cutie - and well worth the discovering! YAM xx

  3. I would have said no they don't have one, but here it is and it is so pretty. I love it. I was shocked that Florida doesn't have more than we do, since most of the state is surrounded by water.

  4. What a fun thing to discover. Maybe some day you will get to see it in person.

  5. OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH my CATS what a discover you made by visiting GiGi Google. She is one smart gal.
And amazing about the elevation...who knew. The architecture reminds me of the windmills you see in the Netherlands without the windmill. We certainly would never have thought there was a lighthouse in your beautiful State!! Thank you for joining us today...on this wonderful Blogville lighthouse day!
    Hugs madi your bfff

  6. That is so beautiful! Who would have thought Colorado has a lighthouse! We only have fake ones here in KS! ... and the one Cam and I imagine by the Kansas Ocean, of course.
    Yours sincerely,
    Margaret Thatcher

  7. Dearest R and Shyla and Mom...since you mentioned about mom and dad climbing the lighthouses we wanted to share this link. IN 2015 they took a tour of all the Lighthouses in NC. It was a tour sponsored by Globe Treks..our of Hendersonville, NC. They cater to Seniors...on that trip they met the most amazing couple Jerry (90ish) and Elsa(late 80's)
We thought you'd enjoy reading the post about them. Elsa was truly an inspiration. Anytime I think my 69 year old body can't/shouldn't do something I think of Elsa.

    Hugs Cecilia and Madi

  8. That's cool. The tallest lighthouse is in Colorado 😊well done!

  9. That is a wonderful little lighthouse! Howdy sweet Shyla!

  10. Salt water, or snow in winter and mountain flowers in summer, and a lighthouse. This is so high, what a delight to find one. These days probably all run with a flick of a finger, digital, not like years ago, polishing the many lens, and the keepers were not allowed to wear watches, jewellery or belt buckles when doing this, as the glass, if scratched, would not reflect the light properly. My friend Walter, when in HMS, said the lighthouses were so important, and saved many boats and crew from going down.

  11. How wonderful to find a lighthouse where you would never expect one!! I'll have to put it on my bucket list!!

  12. A lighthouse at above 9000 ft altitude? Who would have thought it? Well googled!
    Toodle pip!

  13. Wow - that's pretty amazing. 9000 feet no less!

    Abby Lab

  14. Holy light beacon! I had no idea. I'll have to check that guy out! Thanks for posting about it. The things you learn in Blogville. 😊

  15. WE need that in our back yard for the goats. mags and gus

  16. How cool is that!! We could not find one in Idaho so we had to adopt one
    Hazel & Mabel

  17. We would have never thought you could find a lighthouse in Colorado. Maybe some day you can visit and get your own pictures and the pups can swim in the reservoir.

  18. Isn't that cool! I wonder how many lighthouses there are that aren't actually on the seacoast?
