The Hachi Chronicle

Hachi continues with his up and down behavior. He clearly worries about lots of things, as you can see in this photo. He was worried about something outside - but I didn't know what it was.

But then, almost instantly, he relaxed and snuggled into his brother. Look at those soft eyes.
A dog's "recovery" ability is important. That means how fast they recover after they worry about something. In this case, it was fast which is super.

Soon, he was asleep.

A little later on, he went out to play with his sister. His recovery from neuter surgery is over and was uneventful so he can play again! Shyla really wanted him to play stick with her. But, she's still a bit too strong for Hachi, even when she is taking it easy for his sake. So, he tends not try to wrestle the stick from her.

Like all little brothers, he did stick out his tongue at her!!
I am still struggling to accept how long it will likely take to teach Hachi to be less afraid. Indeed, just after this photo, a pair of people came into sight, running through the meadow. Hachi has played in this meadow since January but he has never ever seen anyone else in it. He barked reactively at them, and I couldn't back him up fast enough to calm him down. Fortunately, they have had a reactive dog themselves so they were very understanding.

There's so much for our boy to learn... Fortunately, he's already wonderful most of the time. He's so loving with us, his family.

  5. He sure is a good looking pup. I know you'll teach his the way he should be. That's all you can do. Yes, he's family to you and most important you're family to him.

Have a woof woof day all you pups. My best to your smart mom. ♥

Thank you KB, for your suggestions for Hazel. The first thing we did when the diarrhea started was get some pumpkin but she refused to eat it, even mixed with her food. She used to love pumpkin. Little stinker is being very difficult about eating. Thank goodness we have gone 4 days with no diarrhea. Hugs, Linda

  11. he is such a darling dog. Just like kids, as you know, each dog is born with their own "package", so that might just be how he is "wired".......he is wonderful, I am sure he will be less and less worried as he gets older. He might just be a serious sort of soul.

  14. Now that is a very familiar look. I see that on Luke quite often. He also has a good recovery though, so he does have that going for him. I'm glad Hachi has that as well. ♥

  15. Even our little Xena, who has never had need to reactively bark, barks at everyone she sees. *sigh* If you get Hachi over this, let me know how you did it. Oh, and the book arrived today, yay!

  16. Well, Lightning has been a scaredy dog since he was a baby. But his reaction is different, not aggressive at all, just wants to get home or away from what he perceives as a threat. He is much better now. It is mainly bikes that terrify him, or strollers, skateboards, etc. We are sure with the work that you can accomplish, Hachi will do fine in time. Such a little cutie:)

  19. It's always an ongoing saga with reactive dogs. Hachi has received so much love and training, he's doing a decent job with it. My last reactive dog suffered from PTSD and never came close to being able to be anything close to resembling normal dog.
