Moose voices during the rut

It is no secret that I am barely keeping up with things these days. With the remodeling of the new house and the traveling back and forth, I am overwhelmed. Add needing to apply for permits for future work to the list of why I'm overwhelmed.

That has extended to my trail cam work. I just recently discovered some footage from October that made me smile. It was from a cam that is pointed at a mountain lion scrape. However, our moose took it over in October during their mating season.

On one day in particular, they spent a lot of the day deep in the pine forest where lions like to leave their scent. I guess that moose have nothing to fear from mountain lions so they can hang out there without worrying.

The cool part of their behavior was their voices. The bull moose whined and sang with such a high voice that it was hard to believe that such a huge animal was making the sound.

Check out the video and keep your sound on!

  1. it reminds me of the noises we produced with a water can during that time... it was the happiest moment if we got an answer from a real animal...

  2. They sound like whiny old men in pain☺ Am I the only one who thinks they are soooo adorable?!

  3. Hari OM
...I wonder if they think by lying there they pick up some of the scent themselves as camo?!! YAM xx

  4. Amazing. I would love to see this in person.

Have a fabulous day. Scritches to the pups. ♥

  5. What fun footage! We didn't even see the one in the background when they were laying down until it got up. We backed up the video to see her quietly laying there. We are crossing our paws that all your renovation work goes smoothly and hope your feelings of being overwhelmed can calm down soon.

  6. Incredible footage! It was fun to see the second moose in the background too.

Take care of yourself, it sounds like you have a lot on your plate these days.

  7. Whiny old men in pain...that's pretty funny!

  8. what a face! and it is funny, the sounds are so low and he is so BIG. bigger thatn Big and Bigger than Beau and Bigger than about anything in the forest...

  9. Such majestic animals, you would expect a louder voice.

  10. OMW what a wee noise out of a Moose. I've always been tickled by the itty bitty squeak of a hawk.
KB is there a purpose for the fold of skin that hangs from under their chin?

    1. BOL LOL Just saw Brian's comment

    2. Well, it's sexy, don't you think? Ha ha ha! I've read that the bull will rub his dewlap on the female during the rut, perhaps as a way of sharing his scent.

  11. OMD, that moose sounds like MOI !!! BOL!!! Seriously, Ma thought it was me for a moment!
I see he found himself a laaaady!!!! WoooHoo!
    Ruby ♥

  12. Yes, I've heard their communications especially during rut when they seem to like my yard. Great footage!

  13. LOL at Molly's comment - pretty accurate:) They sure do make some very interesting sounds. We bet the new plce will be gorgeous when it is finished. Remodeling is always stressful.

  14. Love those mating noises and a different perspective of that cam location. Moose are such impressive animals!
