Heavy heart

With a heavy heart, I heard from the vet that S has anal sac adenocarcinoma - an aggressive nasty cancer. We're heading to a vet appointment to make a plan of action which will include more tests to figure out if it has metastasized. I've shed some tears but then I looked at S. He's feeling good today - acting like his usual jaunty, goofy, and happy self. So, this is a precious day, and I'm going to do my best to enjoy his loving presence.

More later but many thanks for the words of support that people have sent.

  1. Oh no no no no NO! I'm so sorry KB...please let us know what Nancy et al suggest and I'm crossing all fingers that there are no mets and there is a surgical cure :( Sending a million hugs and thinking of all of you, especially sweet S boy...
Such a cute picture-he is just such a sweet boy. I hate cancer :(
    Big hug,
    Sue

  2. Our dog had anal sac adenocarcinoma and his clinical presentation was much worse than your dog's presentation. This is treatable. We had two more years with our dog and we let him go do to severe arthritis, not the cancer.

  3. Oh no! I'm so sorry for the bad news... I don't even know what to say. I'm still hoping for the best for treatment options, and for S to stay happy and comfortable for as long as possible. I know the place you are in right now is scary, but take comfort in your dogs and your bike and your beautiful surroundings!

  4. Shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot. We're sending virtual hugs and all the pink sparkling mojo we can muster.

Keep us posted on the staging, treatment plan, etc.

  5. I was so hoping it wasn't going to be anything serious. You often mention being sure to enjoy every day with your dogs, and I think that's wise no matter what their age and how healthy they seem. My thoughts are with you.

  6. Thanks to all of you. Our vet visit turned into an epic journey, as the canyon road to our house was closed due to severe snow for 3 hours just as I tried to drive home. So, I just arrived home (9PM) from a 3PM appointment.

Tomorrow, S will have an abdominal ultrasound, and, if that's clear, chest xrays to look for mets (cancer spots elsewhere in his body). The results will tell us a huge amount about his prognosis and help us decide on treatment.

  7. I wondered about the canyon road since it was snowing like mad late Weds afternoon and early evening. I'm glad you guys made it home safely.

  8. Oh, so sorry to hear the bad news. Those of us with dogs and especially those of us who have lost dogs have heavy hearts. I hope there's been no metastasis and I'll keep good thoughts for you and for S.
