Our day in photos

K and I had a wonderful mountain bike ride this morning. Despite signs that K's urinary tract infection might be returning, she was full of zip and happiness.

Taxiing for takeoff...
Flaps up, she lifts off!
While we enjoyed the view from the meadow after K's romp, I looked closely at the Indian Paintbrush. In concert with the yellow flowers, it paints a gorgeous picture.
We went to the vet in the afternoon. The bottom line is that all canines in our house are sick. With only about 1/4 of the tests back, we already know that R has at least two bad kinds of bacteria invading his GI tract, fully explaining why he won't eat. And, K's urinary tract infection has recurred. It's a particularly nasty kind of bacteria so she'll be on antibiotics for at least another four weeks. Despite the maladies, I'm relieved. So far, everything that the vet has found is fixable. My fingers are crossed that the rest of the tests are normal, normal, normal.

Despite R's pose in the photo below, he actually loves going to the vet. He also seeks cave-like cubbyholes for hiding where ever he hangs out...
Sometimes I feel like we are the most illness and injury prone pack on Earth. I almost hang my head when we walk into the vet's office, *yet again*. When my vet sees that almost embarrassed expression on my face, she gives me a spiel about how we give our dogs such full and interesting lives that they have more opportunities to pick up bugs or get hurt than most dogs. She's good - somehow I feel like I've received a medal of honor for having frequently ill dogs!

The afternoon/evening storms have arrived again. It's time to don the rain gear and hike with the dogs...

  1. Khyra will khross the paws for both to feel better soon!

Have you ever considered cranberry capsules or even organic/natural cranberry juice for K?

  2. Poor germy critters. I'm glad it's all fixable. Hugs to all of you.

  3. Hi Khyra: K does take "Cranberry Comfort", a cranberry extract. Her problem is actually anatomical. Her "privates" are tucked up underneath her so far that they don't air dry after a pee. Most dogs with her conformation get a HUGE surgery to change the position of those body parts. We chose a more conservative approach of cranberry comfort and wiping K's privates with a baby wipe after every pee. It has reduced the UTIs to about one per year, a big success in my book.

Hey, this almost goes together with your "wickhed" post!

  5. Poor Pups! We hope they are both doing better soon. Lately it seems as though we have been funding our vet's new wing, so we fully understand your comments. When Mom calls in now, she just says, "Guess who?" and the office girls know right away who it is.

    Paws crossed for good improvement.

  7. At least it's all fixable! None of it is pleasant, but if it makes you feel better, back when Hawk was with us, he was prone to sheathe infections at one point in his life. The treatment for that involved rubbing Neosporin on the, ahem, affected area. My husband immediately preclused himself from this treatment, saying "no guy touches another guy there"! After I started putting that medicine on (which thankfully was only required over the weekend) he followed me around the house with a look of total adoration. I vowed then that the rest of our dogs would be girls! Sheesh! So, hey, it could always be worse!

Oh, and for the record, Morgan's soulful moment was over a squirrel!

  8. Mom knows best! Of course, you knew something was up! Isn't it funny when you just know something is up? Glad everyone will be okay and back to normal soon!

  9. I was thinking cranberry, too. It doesn't surprise me one bit that you chose that alternative over surgery. You have lucky pups! They have a mom who refuses to expose them to anything she wouldn't do herself!

Glad you got to the bottom of the problem. Hope both dogs are soaring alongside you again soon!

  10. Sounds like you have a great vet! Also you take VERY good care of your bestest furiends. Hope all goes well with the rest of the tests. Our Sasha has a problem like K & M has to clean her too like that.
We too liked the allilog. Surprised to see it where it was mainly because of its paintedness.

  11. I'm with the vet - the occasional infection is a small price to pay for the grand journeys that you take your dogs on. If only other dogs were so lucky!

I'm glad everything that was found is "fixable," too. :)

  12. Paws crossed that both K and R are on the road to recovery. Good news that things appear to be "fixable."

  13. Aw! Hope the antibiotics work their wonders, and bring sweet K & R both back to super health :) We are always emailing out vet with one question or concern or another.... Sigh.
Hope the rain coats are out! We experienced some light thunder/lightening and drizzles a few days out camping. Could definitely feel the high country pressure change. A bit spooky, and also exciting.

    Hugs and snaggle-tooth kisses,
    Sierra Rose
