A bright spot

R's expression in this photo sums up how we all feel in this first week of living without K.
We are all trying to rally. As part of my grief process, I am working on a montage of my favorite photos of K. This is one of my favorites, taken fairly recently. I'm pretty sure that I'll never know another dog who will look at me with such love.
But, I'm finding solace with R. The Runner and he have been joining me on some mountain bike rides. Togetherness is helping us all get through this time.
R is so full of life and vigor.
We love him, and he is one of the sweetest souls in the world. He's a bright spot in our life.

  1. Beautiful thoughts and photos as always. You are in our thoughts daily.

    Sam and Pippen

  2. We have been gone and missed many of your posts! So VERY sorry about K but you have so many memories that will always be with you of your time together. It is so hard when one of our family leaves us. We have found they are with us always if only in our memories of good times and pictures we have taken. Thank you so much for taking us along with you and K on your tough journey! We feel as if we were there and part of your life during this hard time. It is so sad when we have to say goodbye. We had to say goodbye to 2 Sibes and our Greyhound all within 6 months. Terrible BUT they are still with us in our memories and hearts. So it will be with K. You and K were/are such an inspiration for all of us. Thank you for sharing! You will continue in our hearts and thoughts. When we came back I was thinking of you and K and realized it was during the time you were saying goodbye until you meet later. Love you all and take care!!!
So glad you have R and the runner to share and be with at this time!

  3. R is definitely a bright spot. You can see the love in your hugging picture.

  4. Ahhh, R - you are such a sweet boy - you learned well from K. We always found pouring through the photos brought so much joy to the heart despite the tears. The mutual love between you and K was so precious and so unique. Wait, not "was" - IS and always will be.

  5. Now don't think that we are fickle, but we love the look of R in the first and last two photos. Seeing you with him lifts our hearts.

I am sure that K approves of your new riding companions

  6. I said during 'r'ecent months that K would teach R so many lessons prior to her leaving us -

Maybe she felt her pupil was ready to graduate -

    Thanks for the awesome pics!

  7. Love that picture of you & R. The look on his face is priceless.

  8. We think K will guide R and you will be even closer now.

  9. R will give you so much comfort, just look at the photo of you both together. He will miss K so much, and like you, he has to adjust to new days so different.Love the photo of K's expressive eyes, your photography is outstanding, and will hold many wonderful memories, bring tears, and show us all K in her beauty. Cheers, Jean.

  10. I know just how you feel. Nola was and is my shining star after Charlotte's death. That photo of you and R is so sweet

  11. We're so glad you and R have each other.

  12. He looks so happy with you!

  13. Ann...from..THE OUTER BANKS OF NC...said....These pictures are priceless ....they all have so much meaning...I hope you know what a brave spirit you have..and with facing the sadness.. will only make you stronger in the coming days as you give each other the comfort you need....."in the midst of quietness...the heart knows things the mind cannot begin to understand"....Give R a big hug .. my heart loves him and I wonder what he must be thinking.....

  14. That's one of my favorite K pictures, too!

I always love R stories! He seems like such a good-natured comedian of a dog. Those photos of him are fantastic!

  15. So very sorry for your loss. I know K was and will continue to be your heart. It looks as though R is more than willing to fill in a little. Not take the place of K, but be there to help you heal. They take our hearts don't they?

  16. I know that K was the love of your life...that is how I feel about my big guy that passed away a couple of years ago. I still think of him every single day. May R bring you some comfort during these trying times. Love the picture of you two hugging!

  18. You are the best, R!

    Love ya lots,
    Mitch and Molly

  19. I've thought often of you over this past week because for me, it brings back feelings of my own recent loss of our boy Sam. I know the feeling of comfort you are feeling from 'R' and what a difference it makes at times like this. I can promise you that in time, if you choose, even though the eyes will be different there can be another who will look at you with the same intensity and love and devotion.

  20. We love the idea of a collage of pictures of K. Take care and our thoughts are with you. Happy Sunday to you all.
    Best wishes Molly

  21. and there will be many more bright spots in your life....i am still in thoughts are with you during this difficult time...

  22. There is nothing like the boundless love of a dog, be it just in memory, as K's must now be, or in the moment and full of life and vigor, as R's is now. We know you will get through this, impossible as it may be to conceive at this stage.

  23. Hard not to smile looking at R. He is stepping up and helping you through your grief.

    Mango Momma

  24. Lovely photos. Dogs are the best healers, glad you are finding solace in R.

  25. We can all just see that R knows what needs to be done. That beautiful picture of you and R gives us comfort that the healing process has begun.

    Good boy R!

    Lily Belle

  26. R will help you all thru this. Sending love and hugs.

  27. Love the photo of K. Look at the photo of you and R...."I am here for you." That is the look I see on that beautiful face. You have been in my thoughts daily. I'm glad to hear you finding some kind of solace.
    Take care♥

  28. Great picture of you and R. Shows a lot of love. K:s eyes we will never forget...
Hope you all manage the days better and better. K will always hike with you.
    Hugs from us!

  29. Lovely pics of R and you, and K as well, with the magic eyes. Dogs grieve the loss of pals just as much as we do. While we are trying to manage the loss of one pet, we are trying to help another pet cope with their loss. You are doing well, KB, and we wish you the very best.

  30. It must be so difficult. We say once a week have a "K" ride to all her favorite places.
    Benny & Lily

  31. R is super sweet. He reminds me a bit of my Astro, happy, sweet, and sensitive. I'm sure he's missing K too and is happy to spend more time together.

  32. The power of love and the bond of family are amazing balms for the grieving soul. We hope that you all feel K spiritually running with her Pack.

  33. R is a sweetheart and will fill that aching gap...just look at the love as you plant that big hug on him. Squeeze tighter!!!!!

  34. Hi KB,
Wonderful photos. To me it appears that R has grown wiser and knows he has an important job to do...K taught him well.

  35. I am looking at the expression on R's face. He looks so very different.

All the photos are again touching our hearts. The one of you and R- is tugging at me right now.

R is saying "lean on me.

  36. Although I know this has been an incredible loss for you, it's so good to see you relishing your moments with R. I have seen a rainbow two days in a row now, and I always think it's K smiling down on you.

  37. Been sad for you as it all seemed so sudden at the end - I thought there would be more "down" time, but so pleased for you she was really pretty active until the end.
I adore black labs - seeing you with such a beautiful boy warms my heart as we all cope with the loss of beautiful K

  38. I have no words for this one. That picture of you hugging R has just tugged at my heart strings. It is so beautiful. Togetherness is the key! :)
