Highs, Lows, and Questions

It has been a wild week, with high points, low points, and many questions.
The highest point has been seeing my Shyla grow more comfortable with the world. Aside from one incomprehensible day when she was scared from the very instant that I opened the car door in town, she has a streak of about 3 weeks of great socialization training sessions in town.
On a good day in town, I barely recognize her compared to the dog who I met at the end of August. I still "protect" her from the scariest stuff by going around it or giving her space to look at it from a distance, gradually moving closer to it, using our BAT protocol. It's odd but one of the scariest things for her is men talking loudly into cell phones. Go figure...

The low point of the week was learning that there is a far greater likelihood that my thyroid gland has cancer in it than I originally thought. Two nodules are very suspicious, leading them to take 8 biopsies during my hospital session on Monday. My neck is still bruised and sore. Unfortunately, it is now after 5 PM on Friday, and I have not heard the results. Thus - my representation of the Power of the Paw.
The odds are that, regardless of what the biopsies say, the docs will want to remove my thyroid gland because of these "dangerous-looking" nodules. I have an appointment with a thyroid specialist next week.

Thus, this week has been full of tumultuous emotions. On top of the current affairs, it's been a year since the day that we found out that K had lung mets - and I truly realized that no miracles were going to save her. That was one of the hardest days of the entire journey.

But, I must say, there has been a surprise miracle in my life - Miss Shyla.
Shyla continues to generate magical rainbows everywhere she goes.

  2. Hi Y'all,

    Shyla's progress is truly wonderful.

A friend of ours had thyroid cancer and after treatment the only side effect is that she has to take thyroid meds. My brother-in-law just completed treatment for throat cancer that killed his thyroid...so he takes thyroid meds. Advances have been enormous in medicine...so no matter the diagnosis...a long healthy life is still in the future.

Don't worry everyone is praying for you or crossing their paws.

  14. The one good thing about thyroid cancer is that it is relatively easy to treat and has a good prognosis afterward.

I will keep positive thoughts as you await your findings. Thank goodness for a supportive runner and two fantastic Labs.

  25. Of course, no cancer is a good cancer, and personally, I know I'd be a wreck if I was in your shoes right now - but I work with two women in their 30's who've had thyroid cancer and are doing great; keep your spirits up :)

  29. Those rainbow pictures are some of the coolest photos I have ever seen! I am in total awe!

I am sorry that your health issues are so scary right now. I could say a lot of things to try to make you feel better, but I doubt it would help. What would bother me the most would be not knowing. I'm sure you just want to know what your plan of attack is at the moment. I know I would! I will simply say that I hope you know that I'm thinking about you and sending you all my best. I'm sure I'm not the only one, either.

  30. Don't worry about the thyroid cancer. I know 5 people who had their thyroids removed (one had to have some lymph nodes removed too) and all are great now. It takes time to figure out exactly how much thyroid medication you have to take each day, and that will cause mood swings which some doctors don't warn you about, but once they get your level set all is good.

  31. Hi!
I had two thyroid nodules biopsied last week. Four samples from each nodule is standard practice--they like to make sure that at least a couple of slides from each nodule have enough samples.

There is a 95% chance nodules are benign. Most women have them, and most don't even know they have em.

Then, if you do have thyroid cancer, it is the best cancer to get. Super treatable, and excellent prognosis. Just a tiny neck scar, and the need to take a small thyroid pill every day.

Hope this helps your weekend pass easier while you wait.

  37. Hope your results are good tomorrow! A friend had his thyroid removed a few years ago and is doing really well after treatment.
24 paws of luck to you. :)

  38. Those rainbow shots with Shyla are amazing, but my heart is broken over the latest revelation and the wait you've had to endure over the weekend. On the bright side, one of my co-workers, one of my closest friends and my sister-in-law all have had their thyroids removed due to cancer. All are on meds for life, but all are doing fine now. Many positive thoughts coming your way.

  39. Praying for you, dear heart. I don't like reading this news...not one little bit. *sigh*

Here for you in whatever way I can be...and sending healing thoughts & prayers your way.
