Shyla Saturday

Again and again, I realize that Shyla is the sweetest, gentlest, and most loving dog that I can imagine. Over the years, her fear of strangers has been replaced with an incredibly sweet approach to them. She's winning the hearts of the people working to fix up our new house. After she gets over her initial shyness, everyone wants to pet her and hang out with her.

A huge highlight of every day for me is my morning outing with Shyla. We start out with golden hour photography just as the sun is rising. My favorite subjects is her (surprise, surprise). Then, we ride together, sometimes stopping for more photography like the next photo up near the Lone Ponderosa.

She's been showing small signs of her age (9) in terms of occasionally getting sore legs. While I should be prepared for it, these signs still scare me. I'm sure that we'll need to adapt our routine in the future. However, for now, we'll keep enjoying it for as long as we can. Every day is precious.

Happy Shyla Saturday!

  7. I know that concern so well, as we dog lovers all do. I cant believe Faith will be seven this spring. I soon will have another conversation with her about her butt, which is getting a bit heavy. Shyla is in good shape though with all the running she gets to do. And you know how much she must love being with you, together, just the two of you, out in nature. I believe now, looking back so much during this pandemic isolation, that it is the moments of our lives that count.

  15. Not that you're asking for advice...but when Obi started licking his forelegs (his only indication of pain/discomfort) after hikes at age 9, we (after talking with our vet) added Omega 3s and Dasuquin to his diet. The licking stopped within a couple of weeks, and a year later he's going strong, so we assume they're helping.

    SO impressed with Shyla's progress!

    1. Thanks, Chris! We have started both Omega 3's and Dasuquin. We also recently added an NSAID. She seems to have arthritis in her paws, and the NSAID made a huge difference. I'm glad that Obi is doing well!

    2. We also give Dasoquin. For Omega 3's fish oil capsules are a poor source. The fish are caught for this purpose and are often rancid before the boats dock. May I suggest Krill oil in an air pump. I buy it online from Dr. Mercola. Jut google it, choose pets. Also, if you have access to chicken feet, they are a great natural source of glucosamine and chondroitin. They must be fed either raw or dehytrated. Hope this helps.

    3. lexitheschnauzer: We don't feed chicken feet because we suspect the pups would conflate raw/dried chicken feet with the feet of our flock of chickens...! But wish we could - they are a great source. KB: glad the NSAID is working!
