Bright Spot of the Day

Today hasn't been my best day ever. The discs above and below the surgically fused section of my low back are giving me pain. I was "worked over" by my physical therapist, and it was bordering on agonizing. Shyla comes to my appointments because my PT loves her - but even Shyla seemed worried about all the needles being put into me. I'm hopeful this will help so we don't have to even consider any more surgery.

But, on days like today, I'm so glad that I get outside bright and early with Shyla so I can look back our morning fun as a bright spot in my day.

This weekend, I was looking for something in my closet, and I came upon a toy that was a favorite of Acadia, a chocolate Lab who lived two generations before Shyla. I pulled the toy out, and I thought it would be fun to have Shyla play with her departed big sister's toy.

This morning, the two them watched the sun rise together.
And then Shyla jumped around in the boulders carrying her new treasure. She has that wide-eyed look because she'd just leaped off a boulder and was getting ready to land.
I had the feeling that Shyla really liked her new-old toy! As for me, I love the toothy smile on the face of the ball!
We even made it all the way up to Hug Hill, thanks to a recent thaw that has reduced the snow depth to some extent. Shyla and I played retrieving games with her toy up on our local peak.
I love having links among our generations of dogs. The most important links are the dogs themselves - the ones who span generations, like R has done with K and then Shyla.

But, the toy that I found this weekend was a fun link. I know that Acadia ran around carrying that toy just like Shyla did today! For some reason, that makes me smile.

Tomorrow, I'll share a couple of trail camera stories. One involves a tree that was blown down by high winds - and it had my trail camera attached to it. And another involves a mother bobcat who is still hanging out with her kitten from last spring! Their playful behavior, captured by a trail camera, made me smile!

  1. I've been a little down lately with far less reason than you. I hope you are feeling better and love this upbeat post. Thanks for the reminder to look for reasons to smile…starting with our sweet pup.

  4. That is so cute! I love when toys have faces-isn't that odd? The one of them hanging out on the rock is awesome. You should name that toy Wilson! ;) I hope your PT was able to help with the pain-sounds like a tough session :(

  8. Shyla is good for lifting your spirits (and the photos of her are lifting mine). I thought of you today when I saw a wide snow bike tread in a trail I use cross country skiing. I sure hope you can avoid more surgery. I like Shyla the Bat Girl in your Header.

OMD, that toy is FABulous! Yes, I thinks Shyla is feelin' the 'vibes' and lovin' it!

It lasted three whole years before it finally died! Ma tried to find another one, butts nope. I think doggies love new-old toys! I know I did!

  16. How fun for Shyla! Funny you mention this: my husband and I are on a mission to clean out our attic and we found an old toy of our previous chocolate lab Busters.....he loved it. We called it 'dead bird" and Buster was obsessed with it. We both decided to bring it down for Indy and he has been having a ball with it. I too love that connection between past dogs and Indy. We have always said that Buster sent us Indy to ease our brokenness :):)

Love the smiley face ball for Shyla.

  18. We have a big basket of toys and even though Jack and Maggie aren't big toy players, I love it when Jack digs around and finds one of Tino or Sally's old toys and drags it out.

  19. That is great. I have a toy from a past dog that I've passed on to Leroy. It always brings a huge smile to my face when I see him playing it.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

  22. I'm so sorry to hear you are having more back pain again. Does yours get worse in winter like mine? The days are getting longer, the sun shines a tiny bit more each day, and that's making me very antsy for spring!

Love the shots with Shyla and her new toy. What a treat!

  23. We love your new toy and we love the story behind it, Shyla! We hope you're feeling better, KB.

  24. Ha - I love that toy's "face" too!

I am such a purger - I don't have any old toys from prior dogs. Of course, Shadow was always extremely hard on her toys so there really wasn't anything worth saving. I love that you happened upon an old toy and Shyla is getting such pleasure from it!

  25. I swear, you and Sue have the best dog toys and hats! I have passed down some special collars and rather than make me sad like I thought it might, it does feel like a good kind of connection. I forgot to mention before, your banner makes me smile every time I see it. I do hope you are feeling better.

  26. Such fun photos. I so wish Macy could play! I gave most of Mabel's toys away. I still get the smaller ones out from time to time but there is no interest. Your dogs are so beautiful!!

  27. I'm so sorry you're going through a bad period with your back :( My oldest dog Josey had a special, fancy Spode dog bowl, and after I lost her in December, it made me sad to think about letting any of the other use it :( I finally decided that was silly, though, and passed it on to my next in age, Boo. I think of Josey every time I feed them :)
