Thankful Thursday: Winter Beauty

Our world feels as if it's turned a corner so that it's predominantly winter. After a couple of days of snow and clouds, this was the 16°F world that greeted us this morning.
I always have trouble with the transition to winter. Last year, I realized that the short days were a big part of it, and I got a light box. I use it at breakfast every morning, and it has helped lighten my outlook a lot.

Perhaps partly due to treating my mild SAD, I was thrilled to be rolling my fat-tired snow bike out into this world this morning. It was so beautiful and crystal clear that I decided to take a few aerial photos of our world from a high point not too far from home.
It was nice to feel my love of winter's beauty returning. I've spent too much of the past couple of weeks wishing that we were still in the desert.

As is so often true in my life, a dog who was rejoicing in the moment led the way.

Shyla adores the snow and cold. She lies in the snow as if it's toasty warm!

Even the light is becoming warm and glowing, like it is near the winter solstice. This photo was at sunrise on a slightly misty morning before our recent snow. The world glowed in the light of the rising sun.
So, on this Thankful Thursday, I'm feeling grateful that my spirits are lifting even though the days are still getting shorter. I'm also thankful for my canine family who remind me to seize every day to find as much joy as possible!

Those are good things; and winter does indeed have an appeal all its own. Just takes a bit of practice to appreciate it at times! YAM xx

  2. The short days are tough! But you always see the positive.

  3. we can see how much Shyla loves the cold air and snow.. that first view of the trees, they look like they are made of frozen ice. so beautiful and so is the Arial view. can we see your light box and how you use it when you wake up? I know a light box that we put things in to take photos, but wonder what yours is

    1. I'm sure it's something like this:

    2. I'll put the link to the one that is like what I bought at the end of this message. I keep it where I eat breakfast, and I have it on for 30 min while I eat my breakfast and read the news. It is bright but it seems to help.

      Here's the link:

  4. Yes, I suffer from SAD, too. I bought a light, but didn't keep up with using it long enough to notice a difference and ended up discarding it when I moved...

  5. Such beauty. I love that early morning light.

  6. That's way to cold for us but it sure is pretty and Shyla always makes us smile. Thanks for joining the Thankful Thursday Blog Hop!

  7. On this Thankful Thursday, I'm thankful for your alpenglow photo today. Stay warm and enjoy the beauty of snow crystals.

  8. We are also enjoying some mornings in the teens and have had a few dustings of snow. Winter is our favorite time of year. No one gets to warm on walks, most humans are not out in the winter so we have the outdoors to ourselves, and the darkness and cold make life so much more cozy and snuggly. Hope that light helps you out.

  9. I love the picture of you lying in the snow, Shyla!

  10. The man of the house here has a touch of SAD too. He keeps an eye on his Vitamin D levels too. Maybe one of those light boxes would be a great Christmas present:)

And oh yes, look at those pearly whites Ms. Shyla has all the way even to the back!!!

  11. Ha! That’s so great!

PS - I just played the game with B where she holds her stay across the yard and I pile up treats. As soon as I called her she came running SO fast! Yay for a new way to entertain her! Thank YOU!

  12. Millie & Walter are looking forward to zooming through their first snow of the season tomorrow.

  13. OMD! What an incredible sight to wake up to each day. I am so jealous but don't mind living vicariously through you!

  14. I have to have the window blinds open in the winter as soon as the sun is up to let the light in.
I am not a fan of the cold - once again it seems that winter temps have started too early

  15. A beautiful post KB.. I understand how you are affected by mother nature,,, I am too.
    Beautiful photos,,, beautiful thankfulness,,,,
and were thankful for all of you

  16. You do know how to make a cold winter day even more beautiful

  17. It really can be an adjustment with each season. Especially if it is shockingly different. I am glad your dogs lead the way. Sweet.

  18. While I'm lamenting the onset of winter (we got just a tiny bit of snow this week, but the temperatures have been in the high 20's only during the days), the dogs seem energized by it! They are pretty much the only thing that keeps me going outdoors in the winter!
