Cracker Jacks Box

K had a great day yesterday, despite what is scorching heat for us mountain dwellers. In the morning, we made it to Hug Hill, a big accomplishment for K these days. I like this photo with the mountains and a flying bird behind K.
In the evening, we took a relaxing but still hot sunset hike. K glowed as she ran in the meadow.
And, she glowed happily as I put her on a "pedestal". It was one of those days when I dared to hope - maybe, just maybe, the latest chemotherapy drug is slowing her disease. Our regular vets seem very surprised that K is still hiking based on the state of her lungs, which is why the tiny bit of hope that the new drugs are working appeared in my heart.
But, as all of you know who have been through a journey like this one, hope is scary when a person has started the process of accepting the inevitable ending. Indeed, that tiny bit of hope made it harder for me when K seemed sluggish and tired today.

When it was time to get out of bed this morning, she didn't look thrilled.
When K remembered that breakfast follows getting out of bed, her attitude improved immensely. Then, we had a nice lazy walk, with both of us moving slowly. I know that the heat is finally really getting to me. Perhaps that's what is bothering K as well.

I dragged myself through my day, feeling tired, hot, and sad. I usually love my mountain bike ride - but not today. Then, I found some funny photos on a wildlife camera close to the house. A curious bobcat decided that it was time to check out the funny glowing box on the tree.

First, he walked directly at it with his eyes fixed on it. It's in black and white because the world was getting dark at the time when he visited.
The camera is mounted a little higher than his head so the first view was of his ears. Look at the tiny tuft sticking up out of the tip of his left ear!
Then, he must have put his paws on the tree to get a better look. I bursted out laughing when I saw this one. I love our kitties.
Wildlife cameras remind me of Cracker Jacks Boxes. Remember the surprise toys in the bottom of those boxes? Checking a wildlife camera reminds me of my childhood excitement over the toy in the Cracker Jacks box. When I check the photos, sometimes I find something that really makes me smile!

  4. Let's still have hope! We'll blame today on the oppressive heat.

That cat is sure funny. What a great childhood memory. I still eat Cracker Jacks to this day! Except for now, their prizes really stink!

  6. A crackerjack box indeed! The heat has bad my way also. While I enjoy summer, I get migraines from humid stormy weather, which is why I'm not disappointed when fall arrives. I hope some of our rain is working your way.

  8. The heat hit here very hard and fast. The pups are not terribly happy about it.

How good to hear that K had such a good day, and wanting breakfast is a good thing too:) Nothing wrong with a little hope.

And cracker jack boxes - we see you managed to get a "box" in there for International Box Day:) You are so right, the toy in the bottom was the best part. Those kitty pics are precious.

  17. I love how wild and domestic cats act so much alike -- that last picture is hilarious! I am as much of a cat person as a dog person. Perhaps I'd better just say I'm an animal person.

  18. If your heat is like ours right now, I don't blame either of you for feeling sluggish! It's brutal here. And I think we all have mornings when we just don't feel like getting out of bed, too.

I had to laugh about that last picture, too! That little photo bomber looks like quite a character. I have a feeling I'm not alone in hoping that he comes back by!

  19. I know for sure those are "Cracker Jack" photos, KB. It's so dry here but still in the 70's - not too hot yet at altitude. Hope K has a good day tomorrow - and you, too.

  28. I love the kitty pictures - it is fun when you get interaction between subject and camera! I had an extreme closeups of bear an my camera (I laughed too) and a couple of times the bear had knocked my camera on the ground - although didn't damage it...

    Neat stuff, KB.

  33. I'm sure you hang onto every little bit of positive-ness you can with K. No doubt she is a special dog and I'm so glad you are still able to enjoy your hiking routine. These will be memories you will cherish forever.

I'm also glad that curiosity didn't kill the big kitteh cat! I think your comparison of Cracker Jack prizes to finding "treasures" on your camera very appropriate!

    Peaceful trails,
    Chester's Mom ;0-)

PS - Just because you don't see a comment on your posts, doesn't always mean I haven't stopped by. I often get interrupted before leaving a comment and then never get a chance to stop back. I always enjoy each and every post that I see!
