Sunsets at K's Rock

As many of you know, I love taking photos of Shyla at sunset in the desert. She's an amazing model, and she's reached a point where she seems to know what I want her to do before I ask.

So, when she lets me know that she wants to have some non-photographic fun during a sunset shoot, I let her. She's earned it. One day on our trip, she wheeled around to do a recall.

But she stopped before she got to me to pick up a stick.

I thought that she wanted me to play fetch, which I started to do, but she stopped to chew on the stick. And she made the funniest faces!

This one qualifies for Tongue-out Tuesday!
Actually, this little tidbit demonstrates something that I've learned with positive training. Because I am not compelling Shyla to do any behaviors during training but I'm instead relying on her willingness to work with me, I need to be willing to give a little bit - let her play with a stick when that's what she wants - rather than being a drill sergeant. It makes working with Shyla a lot more fun!

Happy Tuesday.

  4. That is the goofiest smile ever. And a stick, what fun they can have with the basic toy from nature. Love those shots that glow.

  9. Oh my gosh, those faces - too funny! Someone suggested to me once that I let the dogs choose which way to go on walks sometimes, so we do that some. It does seem to make them happy! The only problem is when Cricket chooses one way, and Luke the other. LOL

  12. Humans get the best results from dogs when it is fun. No fun, not the best work. Love that first face, pretty funny.
