Nature and Feline Friday: Mountain lions, bobcats, and dogs all share a scent post

A scent post was started by mountain lions at least a decade ago. Over time, the spot became less secluded with hikers and bikers turning a tiny path into a bigger one. Over time, mountain lions have visited less frequently, and dogs have been the most common visitors. But, wildlife still marks the spot too, with feisty bobcats marking it most often.

Watch the dogs - they show strong interest in the spot. If you're curious about where wildlife mark in your forest, keep a close eye on your dogs. They will show you!

Check out mountain lions, bobcats, and dogs all in the same spot in this video.

  4. I love seeing the dogs but it has a little sad to see that they are there in the wild environment. The wildlife needs their own space. The funny thing is both yesterday and today on our morning walk with bow I'm walking along and we're moving fast and all of a sudden he stops dead and jerks made to a halt and his nose goes down and he's found the cat scent. H-Town we go by that house if the cat has been out in the front yard his nose goes hard down on wherever it has been and he just sniffs and sniffs and sniffs. The first time it happened I didn't know what it was but then the next day I saw a cat in the yard and several times now we've seen a big black cat wandering in that yard

  5. I didn't know so many people with dogs were hiking where your cameras are located. It's interesting that the wild critters are still there and haven't moved into more isolated areas. I haven't seen a bobcat in years here, which of course doesn't mean they are not here. I will pay more attention to their noses when I walk my dogs this morning.

  6. We were waiting for the bobcat to cover his poo like a house cat would. It didn't happen.

  8. Every one is happy, tails high, interesting to see the bobcat use the spot for his toilet and not cover the dropping over, like tame cats do.Wonderful place to have a trailcam, for all the creatures to stop and pose.

    1. Yes, the people know (they're mostly my friends)! They often stop to say something to me on camera - a unique method of communication among neighbors.

  10. Our neighborhood has it's own special "post office" spots where the pups spend a lot of time sniffing and marking. Don't think there's any big cat smells there, though. At least, I hope not!

  12. Looks like Nature has its own version of social media! Loved the bobcat visits, especially where that one stepped in previous footprints. So cool!

  13. I always wondered why Luke goes to certain trees or areas over and over whenever we walk! Those must be the hot spots for our wildlife.
