There's a spot where three gulches converge deep in the forest. Elk and deer wander through. Hungry mountain lions pass through regularly, probably as they search for their next meal. It's a great spot for a trail cam.

I am wondering, what would be the outcome of an encounter between a mountain lion and a bull elk?
ReplyDeleteI don't know the answer to that. I've seen female elk and small bull elk that have been killed by lions. However, I've never seen a big bull elk killed by a lion. In this case, the adult lion was a female and smallish. That makes it less likely that she could kill a big bull elk. I don't know if her kitten might have helped. I've never read about cooperative hunting among lions. So, I don't know. But I do know that the bull elk was very afraid of them! That tells us something.

ReplyDeleteIt's pretty obvious the elk wants nothing to do with the cats. I'm sure it could do some damage with it's hooves but a couple of cats would likely win out.

ReplyDeleteHelter skelter, with branches and twigs snapping as he raced off, bet his heart was beating SO fast!!! The kitten, what great cover they have, I might have missed him too. Hope the lions found dinner somewhere else.
