The future is creeping up

I've been avoiding thinking about the future for a while now. However, the future is almost here so I'm must now deal with it. And it's making me sad and depressed, like Shyla looked on a recent sunrise snowbike ride. Just so you don't worry - I don't think that Shyla was truly sad on our ride. She was just a tiny bit unhappy about the wild mountain winds.
Thank goodness - Shyla is very good at snapping out of it, kicking up her heels, and rejoicing in the moment.
Unlike Shyla, I'm having trouble with focusing on "now" rather than what's about to happen. Tomorrow, R will have elbow surgery. Our sweet dog will have a fairly long recovery after a surgeon "cleans out" his elbow that has congenital dysplasia. It will be his second elbow surgery in his life.

Yup, Shyla, that's the one. Funny, she's sniffed my bad shoulder the same way.
I feel certain that the elbow hurts him much of the time but he still romps with joy. That's something that he and I have in common - we ignore the pain and get on with life. However, sometimes it's more prudent to deal with the pain than to ignore it.
Sometimes I wish that I could explain the surgery to R and his sister so they'd understand why he's suddenly going to be unable to romp and play.
Like R, I am facing surgery, and I'm feeling very sad about it. I'm scared, and I hate knowing that I'll be missing out on some of the fun stuff that I normally love to do for the rest of the winter. So, perhaps it's better not to know ahead of time to avoid the anticipatory fear, sadness, and anger before surgery.
My surgery is next week. But, before that, we have to get through R's surgery tomorrow, and we'll help him get started on the road to recovery. He'll be in surgery early tomorrow morning.

  1. Paws and fingers crossed for R and for you. Sometimes I do think it's better not to know. Then again, I always wish I could explain things to the dogs.

Take good care of R. I'm sure the Runner will take good care of you. Best of luck all around.

  3. Shyla and Runner will do lots of TLC, and I'm sure recovery for R will go well, as it will for you. Yes, any vet visit, surgery or more is so hard to explain, but I do think they know when we tell them. Lots and lots of caring thoughts for tomorrow ,all good wishes for you and for R too, fond greetings, Jean.

  7. I so understand your anger about the surgery. My one careless moment left me with a broken knee cap that promises rehab, and arthritis as well. It totally cramps my plans and schedule. While nowhere near as serious as what you face, it monkeys with all my near-future plans.

I wish both you and R the best in your surgeries. Also, my admiration/sympathies to the Runner as well. His life is about to change as well! You both will be leaning on him quite heavily.

  8. My prayers go out to you and R for successful surgeries and quick recoveries. Shyla will be taking care of both of you.

  9. I'll be thinking extra good thoughts for R tomorrow! I have often wished I could explain things to them before, too. Something tells me that he'll come through it all just fine, but I know it's a lot easier for me to say because he's not mine.

I often find myself explain things to my dogs I know they are never going to understand. It makes me feel better.

Let us know how R does!

  15. We will all be hoping for the very best for R tomorrow and through his healing and then again with the same fervor for you and your surgery and recovery. You are a very brave and strong woman - we wish you the best.

Interesting about Shyla sniffing at R's elbow and your shoulder. We all noticed that the dogs were all sniffing Thunder's all over during his last few days.

Lots of prayers coming your way.

  19. Hey R!! You're so lucky to get to have surgery! I have untreated elbow dysplasia and I'm in pain often. I do know how to relax quite well, though!! Have 'em clean out some elbow stuff for me, too, OK?

    Best,

    -Ruby

  20. Sending our strongest White Dog healing energies and positive thoughts for a quick recovery to R. We hope the pain relief makes him instantly glad that the elbow has been cleaned out...and maybe just a little cooperative about slowing down and being restricted during healing.

  37. Lots of surgeries... lots of repair... lots of opportunities for more happy days because of them. I am grateful.

Today is R's big day!! May his surgery go well & may springtime be extra special because of it.

My knee surgery is tomorrow, dear friend. I too need some joint repair, just like R. My left knee has been giving me fits for almost a year so it's time. The recovery will not be pleasant in the least but I too should be ready for the spring sunshine.

Then next week is your turn, KB. You too will be fixed up as you have needed to be for awhile. By the time the flowers begin to bloom, all 3 of us (R, you & me) will be "blooming" in renewed good health as well.

It always takes a little rain to make a rainbow, dear friend. R is going to show us how to tolerate the rain, so that the rainbow can appear.... and our pot of flowers, instead of gold, will be at the end of it, come spring.

Love you & am praying~ Andrea
    XOXOXO

  38. Hi KB!
Here at the lab ranch on the prairie, we will be sending lots of pawsitive vibes for R for a successful surgery and complete recovery.
So very sorry that you are also struggling with some health issues. Will be keeping you and all of your family (the pups included!) in our thoughts and prayers in the coming weeks as you undergo surgery and through the recovery period.
Shyla will be an awesome nurse and will take excellent care of you and R during your recovery!

  39. Wow, so you must be in surgery about now. I hope it is going well and that you will spring back to life before spring. I hope R does well with his, too, and that's he's back up and romping soon.
