Smart Shyla won a round yesterday. I noticed that she was frequently holding up her left front boot. Her left front paw is not one of the injured ones so I thought that maybe the boot was too tight. I loosened it.
Within 10 minutes, she'd lost the front left boot somewhere close to the hiking trail, but I couldn't find it. So, now, I only have boots on her injured paws, and she seems happier.
Unfortunately, after I gleefully posted yesterday that I hadn't had a migraine in 9 days, I got an aura and then a migraine almost immediately after posting. I'm starting to come out of it now but I needed Miss Shyla to cheer me up this morning. She was up to the task despite the gray skies.
I guess I need to take it one day at a time, not getting overconfident that I've "beaten" the migraines. Because I was becoming overconfident that the problem was gone, I let myself try to do too much and I didn't rest enough.
As I hiked with Shyla today, I went over my life with a fine tooth comb, trying to figure out what I'm doing differently than before my surgery that might be causing the migraines. Foods? Medicines? Sleep? Exercise? The only major difference I could find was that I'm not going on my long outdoor meditative bike rides. Perhaps I'll be cured when I can do those again - that would be stupendous. However, I doubt it.
The truth of the matter is that we are always changing, in invisible ways, so I'm not the same as I was three months ago. None of us are - not even young Shyla.
The constant change in life is something to contemplate and learn to adapt to. Nothing ever stays the same for long. That's a truth worth learning to embrace.
On that note, Happy Saturday!
i'm not very good with change - i fight it, fear it. and so often it is for the better. i hope you can avoid regular migraines!
ReplyDeletebless that smart shyla!
my personality, according to the pundits, is "peaceful" and I do not like change at all. Maybe Shyla didn't like her super boots. Your migraines, I will email with what I was once told to take away from my life or diet. Didn't help much, but we are all different, so it might help you. KB, just take one day, at a time, slowly and carefully, but I will say that the changes in Shyla are totally 100% and more for the good. She glows. Hugs, Jean.
ReplyDeleteHi Y'all!
ReplyDeleteMy Human and her sister in law get migraines. My Human gets acupuncture from a Chinese physician, her sister in law has pills from her doctor she can take as soon as she sees the aura and it aborts the headache.
Hope y'all are feeling better soon!
That Shyla is something else and she sure has a wonderful human who understands what she wants.
Y'all come by now,
Hawk aka BrownDog
Your post reminds me of the Elizabeth Edwards quote, "She stood in the storm, and when the wind did not blow her way, she adjusted her sails." Change is hard for me too, and I find it hard to adjust those proverbial sails... Hope YOU and Shyla feel better and both enjoy your weekend! Take care!
ReplyDeleteDang, a lost shoe and then a migraine. I hope those things quit picking on you. Congrats on the BlogPaws nomination!
ReplyDeleteSorry about the migraine, thought maybe you had that behind you. True that we have to try to embrace changes in life, easier said than done sometimes
ReplyDeleteMy daughter suffers from migraines too and I believe stress has a lot to do with them. Another thought - could the time change have affected you - or do you not change the clocks there? Last week I saw a report on the news about a new "headband" that is now available that has proven very successful in preventing migraines. Somehow it sends pulses to the blood vessels or something like that, wish I knew what it was called - you have to wear it for 20 minutes a day. Maybe just another gimmick, but you never know.
ReplyDeleteIdk, I'm not a huge believer in coincidence - I really believe this is surgery related, and will taper off with time. Here is a link to a thread where people say they've experienced this:

Keep resting, and take your time easing back into activity :)
Shyla's a smart girl! Hope you're feeling better soon.
ReplyDeleteNola
And those look like expensive shoes! I do hope you are feeling better.
ReplyDeleteOh noes! I didn't hear abouts Miss Shylas injured paws!!! I sure hopes they are healin' up now with your FABulous booties!!! I thinks your gonna start a trend Shyla...like Michael Jackson with the one glove!! BOL
ReplyDeleteOh, Ma got the WORSE migraine today too!!! I thinks she took every drug she had to try and stop it and the nausea and just now it eased some, butt still 'there'. They are the worse. I feel for you!! Ma is really considering trying the Botox, because she thinks for her migraines this would work; but the cost is crazy and it is only good for 3 months.
That headband device sounds good, it's not crazy expensive (about 250), but not sure about it yet)
I'll keep my paws crossed that you are feelin' betters real soon!!
{{{{hugs}}}}
Kisses,
Ruby ♥
Thanks for all of these comments. The migraine is continuing but you are all so helpful and supportive.
ReplyDeleteLiparifam - thanks so much for that link. I never knew that people tended to have a big increase in migraines after surgery. I'm going to be reading more about that! It also gives me hope that this will taper off.
Oh Shyla, I wonder where your missing boots are!!? Your still just as spectacular with just 2 shoes on!
ReplyDeleteChanges- its also hard for us.
We have seen changes too, and we try to accept the "new normal". Its hard, but we keep trying.
Hang on KB,, We love what Kim at Golden Pines wrote- about adjusting our sail.... its all we can do.
We love you,,
tweedles and moms
I hope the migraines are just a side effect of the surgery. I'm so glad you have Shyla --- she does look happy!
ReplyDeleteSeems like every time we SAY we aren't getting an affliction, we get it. What's with that?
ReplyDeleteXXXOOO Bella & Roxy
We hope your migraine will vanish after your morning walk! Do your magic, Shyla!
ReplyDeleteLove ya lots♥

I've been working on my book's thematic changes and one of them I wrote down is this: "Not tying happiness to a condition that doesn't allow for change. Letting go of control and adapting."
ReplyDeleteIt's a little hard to adapt to a migraine though. It will be interesting to see what happens when you're able to ride again or do something else that puts you into that meditative state. Horseback riding has cured migraines for me a few times, I think because it requires such focus and the rhythm of it removes all worries and stress from my mind. I hope you find what works for you.
I get migraines, I will say a prayer that you can find a way to overcome them. They are like a vicious unwelcome guests and they always come at the worst time.
ReplyDeleteShyla looks so beautiful and happy running.
Anne and Sasha
I get some type of migraines too but not often. They Think its from stress. But it is mostly only one day.
ReplyDeleteHang on!!
Hugs from Sweden!
KB, if the migraines came on fast & furious after your surgery, then my gut tells me it has something to do with your surgery. Perhaps your therapy is straining a muscle or nerve that is triggering them? Are you taking any medication now, that you didn't before surgery? Perhaps an anti-inflammatory? Are you sleeping in any different position now, than before?
ReplyDeleteI think it's suspect that these migraines started coming on in more rapid succession & more often, since surgery. I believe there's a link somewhere there.
Still praying for you. Yes, nothing stays the same, dear friend. But I don't think your rapid back-to-back migraines are something that's going to "stay"... and that's a good thing, eh?
~Andrea
XOXOXO
Sure hope you find a solution to your migraines!
ReplyDeletePraying that you'll find some relief from your migraines! :/
