Sometimes, the bear continues right past the cam, and I let out a sigh of relief. But, other times, he continues until his face is on the lens.
I've had quite a few bears get curious and even violent over my trail cams. Some of you may remember when Bandit, a black bear, ripped my trail cam into pieces... and the cam kept recording the attack until it was destroyed.
Most times that a bear focuses on a trail cam, s/he investigates or even roughs up a camera but doesn't destroy it. I've had quite a few instances like that. Usually, the cam gets an awesome selfie of the curious bear.
I made a video of a few recent "cam attacks" by bears. The video starts with the least vigorous investigation and rises to the most violent attack of a camera.
What amazing footage :D Milo,Jet and Arli
ReplyDeleteDang, someone doesn't like being on candid camera!
ReplyDeleteI guess some bears want privacy to do their beary things!
ReplyDeleteDo they make the trail cams extra sturdy, in case of overly curious animals?
They do make "security enclosures" for them which are metal boxes to put the camera in. I use them in the places where bears are most likely to investigate a cam. However, the downside is that the enclosures make the camera far more obvious to humans (who might steal it).
DeleteI'm glad to know that none of the cameras were destroyed. It does make for some interesting footage.
ReplyDeleteWhoa - he sure doesn't like his privacy invaded!
ReplyDeleteUp close and very personal, the lens was fogged up, I wonder what they are thinking of a strange object there. Thank goodness the cam cases are sturdy.
ReplyDeleteThat first bear knew exactly where he/she was headed. We hope they don't damage the cameras because we SO enjoy the videos.
ReplyDeleteI love seeing such curious bears, and love all the snooter close ups!
ReplyDeleteFascinating! Do these "investigations" tend to happen more after you've done a camera check? Or more after your scent has worn off?
ReplyDeleteChris from Boise
Great question!! It does happen more often soon after a camera check - probably due to scent that I've left behind.... However, the worst camera attack was when I hadn't been to the cam in a fairly long time - but that one (the Bandit reference above) was an outlier in every way.
DeleteIt's a bit like celebrities striking out at paparazzi....BOL!

I hate that your expensive cameras get messed up, but it sure is fun to watch them! I once watched a bear rip apart my bird feeder, so I know how destructive they can be. Hubby loves to tell the story of how we watched that bear climb up the corner of our high deck, and how much I was enjoying it until he started ripping my bird feeder apart! LOL

It's interesting that they realize that it is something unusual, something that needs to be investigated, and perhaps done away with.
ReplyDeleteMakes you wonder what got under his bonnet to go all Ozzy on the camera.
ReplyDeleteThey are the cutest things. I am good with seeing videos of them for now
ReplyDeleteFunny how they feel the need to attack the cameras sometimes. So destructive out of their curiosity.
ReplyDeleteoh my gosh!
