I love Utah for the crazy rock formations. They are so numerous that they become almost commonplace while we are there. Here is one that always catches my eye during our visits. The mushroom-like formation is as tall as a two story house!
The spikes on top of this formation are hundreds of feet high. The cracked earth truly looks like a classic desert.
The scale of the rock formations is mind boggling.
On the last day that we were in that particular spot, my favorite trail was losing sunlight at about 1 PM because it sits on the north side of a spiky and towering rock formation. It was chilly when the trail was shaded.
Although it was chilly in the desert shade, it was astronomically colder at home than in the desert. At the moment that I snapped the previous photo, my trail cam near home captured this one. It was 10°F where those elk were foraging.
That cold and snow were shocking when we arrived home!
Thanks to the LLB Gang for hosting the Nature Friday Blog Hop!
the sunlight in this special position is the hint to a buried treasure... could you find one? oh wait...you found even 3 ;O)

ReplyDeleteJust wonderful... but the one with Shyla 'shaping' is my fave! YAM xx
mind boggling is a great description. the rock formations blow my mind as does Shyla in the howl postion out on the rock.... does she do this on command or just do it for sheer fun? the cold is even more mind boggling to me. yowsa
ReplyDeleteShyla started howling as sheer fun. Then, I realized that I loved photographing it so I put it on "cue". I say "bark" and she does! The hardest part is getting her to stop doing this once she's started. Currently, it is her favorite thing in the world to do so she very often does it without me giving the cue.
DeleteThose desert scenes are beautiful. It sure is a stark contrast to what you came home to.
ReplyDeleteYour photos are beyond fabulous! How we would love to see this is person.
ReplyDeleteWonderful photos! I've never been to the desert and I'm going to have to add it to my bucket list. As for the cold and snow, I'm much more familiar with that!
ReplyDelete10F, equals -12C. That is cold. Shyla on that projecting rock, like a seesaw out of shape, love it. The rock in the shade, what amazing colours.
ReplyDeleteIn the rocky area that you walk the dogs, do you ever have to worry about rattlesnakes? I lived in Montana and areas like that had rattlesnakes so I would not walk my dogs there.
ReplyDeleteMother Nature always has the most beautiful art. Love those rock formations.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I both love rocks. I was in Utah many years ago and still remember the stunning rock formations I saw, I'd love to take hubby there and see it with him. The canyon and desert were the best part of my trip. What a blessing you are able to go so regularly. Thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteIt really is amazing there, and such a contrast to home! I love the shot of Shyla out on the rock, she must have been thinking she was a coyote or something! :)

Strange how a bunch of rocks can be so majestic. I had no idea the "cracked" sand was classic desert. Although I would love to see it all in person, I think I still prefer my greens and blues.
ReplyDeleteThose rocks really are amazing! Oh brrrrr on the snow!!!
ReplyDeleteYou not only take the best dog photos but the best nature ones too.
ReplyDeleteOh, those are some FABulous photos!!! Nature sure does do some kerazy stuffs! I thinks I like the pic of Shyla barkin' the bestest...butts then again, I might be a smudge bias....

Hopefully you've adjusted to the mountain weather and it's as nice up your way this weekend as it is down in the city. At least the sky is bright blue today which always makes us happy.
ReplyDeleteI taught Piper to bark on command when she was a youngster, and like every other command (or "request" as I believe Piper thinks of it) I taught both a hand signal and voice command. The hand signal is putting a finger to my lips as in "shhhh!" Sometimes at my place it comes in very handy having a hound who will give a little yip or even a big old woof when asked!
ReplyDeleteRock formations can be so interesting. What a shock to go home to cold and snow

Mabel & Hilda.
The rocks can be fascinating and one really wonders how they ended up as they did with some super cool shapes. Enjoy the snow. We are hoping to get some here soon. Our little bit has long melted.
