Black Dog Sunday

I'm taking a break from desert stories today to focus on our black dog! I've been out with Duo around sunset many days recently. At this time of year, I love playing in the filtered sunlight inside the pine forest. Although R is now 8 years old, he still has the zany spirit of a puppy.

I've been glad that the moose haven't been right nearby recently so I can play with the dogs off-leash in the afternoons.

For brief periods, he can be contemplative.

And he is always very alert when we're in the forest. He seems to know that a person or animal is coming way before I do!

When we get home from our sunset hike, the two dogs play like crazy for about 20 minutes, chasing each other all over the house while making ferocious noises. Then, as fast as the play session started, the two dogs fall asleep together.
Dogs really know how to live the good life!

  3. Ah I have a special love for R. Not sure why as we have never owned a black dog. It's a tribute to your skill that you convey his spirit so well. speaking off that, thank you for the advice with my new camera. I will keep it in mind for a strategy for learning.

  17. Speaking of moose, will your dogs bark on command? I wonder if a moose would choose to avoid a barking dog if it was heard from a distance. Closer up, and maybe especially if it could see the dog, the moose might feel that it was a threat/challenge, and act protectively or aggressively, but maybe if it just heard a woof in the distance as it (the moose) was walking along, it would tend to walk in a slightly different direction? I don't know, but I think I'll start having Piper bark loudly a few times as we are heading onto our favorite trails. And maybe every now and then along the way, too. Couldn't hurt! One thing is for sure: moose see us a lot more often than we see them.

  18. How interesting that the dogs do chases and zoomies right after they get home. Some dogs I know do because they're just let off lead, but yours are often off-lead outside anyway. I wonder what makes them do it?
