The Hachi Chronicle

Another boring week, and that's a good thing.

I had a lot of time with Hachi outdoors. I am struck, again and again, at how hard he tries when I ask him to "come" or any other cue. Because he tries so hard, he can look very serious.

He can also look zany!
I can feel him softening still more toward people who aren't me or the Runner. He seems to want to interact with them. A friend dropped by who he hadn't seen in a while and he showered her with kisses. He greeted another friend on the trails with great enthusiasm. I am getting the feeling that he will someday get over the worst of his stranger fear. He is moving in that direction, one person at a time.

In terms of his interactions with R, he didn't have any closeup ones inside the house this week. He did go for off-leash runs with R and the Runner every morning, and they got along well outdoors. I keep reminding myself that slow and steady is what might eventually win in terms of Hachi's attitude toward R. So, we do our behavior modification exercises with Hachi and R every day, and I try not to ponder whether I have a clue about what the future holds.

Life is full of twists and turns. I don't know when it will happen but I predict that I will temporarily be forced to post less frequently in the near future. Please bear with me when that happens. Also, please forgive me for having trouble visiting all of the blogs that I want to visit. Life isn't easy right now.

  4. We get it and hope your normal enthusiasm and positive attitude returns soon. Love is hard, and you love your dogs so much that their problems can weigh. One day at a time. The future is out of our hands. All we have is now, and things have a way of working out even when we think they won't...

  7. I'm thinking of you and yours every day, and sending a little "telepathic snapshot to KB" when I'm out doing chores and see something wonderful. Mostly it's been flowers, plus the occasional sweet goat face or smiling Piper.

  10. KB,
Zany is a perfect description of that 2nd Hachi photo. Ears flying and eyes as big as saucers. He is on a mission. I don't know anything about dog training/behavior but is surely sounds encouraging that Runner, R and Hachi had a good boys outing.

You all remain in my thoughts and prayers

P.S. our mom has been busy helping our Oma (grandma) since she got a new hip this past Friday so we haven't been around much either.

  19. Blog posts take time and a lot of thought. Your sharing of your life, the wild life and all else is wonderful, but when you need to step back and post less, you know what is best right now. Love that Hachi so serious. Hope he continues to progress into lots of happiness with everyone. Cold weather here, snow storms down south, but as the lambing is a lot later there, no little lambs as yet.Up here, lots including twins ,we can see them in the paddocks as we drive to the nearest bigger city .

  20. The secret is patience and not rushing things. If you push too hard, it sets you all the way back to the beginning. Enjoy the progress moments, but don't ask for too much. It will all work out.

  24. Things are so positive with Hachi! We're sorry other things in life are not going so well. Our hearts are with you. My posting was hit or miss when my sister was going through chemotherapy. Life has to be dealt with, I hope things may end up more positive than you expect. ♥
