Our Bobcat Family

You might remember the bobcat family who we glimpsed earlier this summer as the mother moved the kittens from one den to another. Now, the kittens are out and about with mom all the time.

The family visited a dried up water hole. Although we got tons of moisture in the winter and early in the summer, it still dried up very early, probably because it will take more than one year to recover from our drought.

Mom did something that confused me at first. It looked like she was eating grass but, as far as I know, cats don't do that. Then, I realized that she might be licking water droplets from the tall grass. That makes sense, especially if she came to this water hole hoping for a drink.

The kittens seemed curious about what she was doing and crowded next to her.

I put the trail camera clips together into a short video. I hope that you enjoy it!

  1. Amazing footage (once again!). Re: grass - your hypothesis is interesting. On the other hand, our beloved Cocklebur loved eating grass. He's the only cat we've ever had, so I don't know if it was normal or a quirk (he also adored cantaloupe). I didn't see grass blades disappearing down mama bobcat's maw, so you may be right. Boy, those kittens are cute! What ear-spots!

    Cheers,

    1. I must be wrong about cats not eating grass. I think that I need to do some more research about whether wild cats eat grass. When I see scat, I always assume that seeing grass in it rules out a feline. Hmm! I learn something new every day :)

Actually, cats eat grass for the same reasons dogs do - a form of medicininal purge. (Or 'just cuz'...) So I guess large felines would also. YAM xx

  7. The kittens are so adorable! I just love cats of any kind. I do agree with others who have commented, cats do eat grass. I'm sure part of it is for the moisture in it as well.

  9. It is interesting to see how the kittens still stay close to Mom. I don't know about cats and grass, but the three pups here all LOVE grass, especially the weeds.

  11. The first thing our cat Sam used to do when I took her outside was eat grass! So I'd certainly say that wild cats probably eat it as well. I love the ears - they really stand out in that video!

  17. Love seeing the adaptive behavior. The kittens are adorably cute. One gingerly stepping after mom and the other one bringing up the rear blasts through like a thundering herd of buffalo!
