A Beautiful Evening Hike

One evening recently, I took the Duo for their evening walk on the trails near our house. As we hiked upward, the world had fallen into shade. The combination of R's black fur and the yellow aspen leaves caught my eye.

Now that I look at the photos, it was a glorious combination.

It was before his left eye took the recent terrible turn for the worse... although you can tell that the eye was swollen in this photo.

In my humble opinion, he is a handsome dog!
By reading about other blind dogs who have lost their eyes and also by realizing that R won't be comfortable until that eye is gone, I have accepted what will happen soon - and R is helping me see it as a transition and nothing worse. We are still working on finalizing the exact date. .

After that brief stop in the aspens, we hiked up to a viewpoint where we can see the Continental Divide. The sunset was stupendous.
That was the night before the snowstorm that dropped our golden aspen leaves to the ground. However, I still have autumn photos that I want to share. You'll be seeing them in the coming week!

  4. I agree he is MOST handsome in deed.. I forgot to tell you, a couple of years ago, I met a blind horse, his eyes had been removed. he was so happy and healthy and he lived with a seeing eye horse that had a bell on his neck, he followed the horse every where he went and came to the fence to talk to me. he was perfectly happy and I pray R will be happy with you and his sister.

  7. Just like the sunset, he is gorgeous. I am sure the eye surgery will go well, and he will cope, as he has done before. You, too. XXX

  9. R will feel so much better without a painful eye. I hope the procedure can be done soon so he can concentrate on eating restorative treats while healing up and feeling better :)

  14. R is a very handsome fellow. The hard part is to remember, he won't be very bothered by losing an eye, except for for the actual surgery/recovery. He will still be his happy self and do things he wants to do. It is harder for the human. He will still be a very handsome fellow.

  15. They talk a lot about how black animals are difficult to photograph. Luke can be hard sometimes with his black face. But don't they offset bright colors so beautifully! I love that.
