Puppy Hachi's First Week with Us

Hachi is continuing to get along better and better with our "Big Dogs" as we've been calling them recently. We adore seeing R hang out with him comfortably.

I even was able to get a photo of the three of them together.

We tried to emulate a photo taken 11 years ago when R was a puppy. The other two in the photo are S the Yellow Lab and K the Chocolate Lab. It's cool that little R is now the eldest in our pack.

I thought that you might enjoy seeing a short video of me training Hachi. I am teaching him things that are useful right now in his socialization: 1) touching my hand with his nose (because I can use hand touches to help him be comfortable around new people and objects), 2) responding to his name by coming toward me, and 3) sitting.

I am using a clicker to mark the instant when he does the right thing and following each click with a treat to reward him.

Thank goodness that he's going to grow. Training a tiny puppy like him is tough on my spine that is held together with rods and screws!

Here is the video.

  2. this video is helping me already... not about the touch but I am trying to teach BB to look at me when I say it.. I can use the toss the treat out and then say look at me. I like your training videos and both of todays photos of the three are so beautiful they make me HAPPY just looking at them...Hachi is really smart. so is BB but I am the one who is not smart about training.

  8. Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww what wonderful photos of your Big Dogs and growing pup and of R when he was a pup with his S and K. Amazing how little Hachi appears with the Big Dogs. It will be interesting to see how tall he is in 6 months.
I did so enjoy the training video. I love how he automatically sits after he touches your hand. So Smart.
Yep lets hope he grows a few inches this week for your back's sake. Otherwise you might need some knee pads to train from a lower level. Hugs and thank you for sharing
    Happy New Year's Eve

  9. And then there were three again, lovely to see R as a puppy. Hachi is learning so quickly, maybe he could jump onto a stool so you do not have to bend over.Happy New Year.

  11. I remember all those training days and months with our dogs, each of which we got as little puppies. It's the guaranteed way to get a well-trained dog, but I'm not sure I'd be up to training another one. Our next dog will be smaller and from a rescue or shelter. Loved the video of your very clever Hachi.

  12. He may be little, he may be only 9.5 weeks old, but he is one very SMART boy and quick learner. And as cute as a button. We love that shot of the Trio.

  19. What a good boy! I also love watching your training videos, and seeing the result of your training when I see Shyla and R!

I also love the way Rosy looked at me expectantly every time she heard your clicker! LOL The Clicker is my favorite training tool.

I was wondering if your having a hard time finding toys for him to chew on,, that he cannot get the stuffing out of? Does he like to chew?

  22. I love the family photos and the previous post of your pack bonding. It's a good feeling, isn't it?

As for your video. We have been considering "formally adopting" our foster boy Chipper. I think that if (when?) we do, the way you're training your little boy may work well for our "big"boy."
