Winter is here

We awakened to winter. Snow covered the sky lights, the deck, and the forest floor.
When we stepped out the door for our morning hike, Shyla got an immediate case of the zoomies, and she moved so fast that I didn't get any great photos of her sprinting like a maniacally happy puppy!
I did capture her standing still for a moment when we were almost to the top of Hug Hill... She's getting some bulging muscles!
The light layer of snow on the autumn leaves was gorgeous. Orange willow leaves...
Wild red rose bush leaves...
Shyla was so ecstatic about the snow that I couldn't help but smile along with her. Even though snow is the start of a long winter, it is beautiful and fun to play in!
Another fun thing about winter-like weather is that the elk herd who lives in our forest for the winter draws in mountain lions, and I love capturing them on my cameras.
This mountain lion has ear tags and a collar for a study in our area. He also looks thin and hungry. I wonder if the elk that are now wandering the forest attracted him to hunt here.

Snow, mountain lions... it must be winter. But, no doubt, there's a bit more warm autumn weather ahead of us!

  1. That mountain lion does look thin. Hope he/she bulks up for the winter. Those are some glorious shots. Shyla is showing her strength indeed. Snow zoomies are the best. I am looking forward to it. Have a joyful weekend.
    Blessings,

  3. Shyla looks SO much healthier than when she came to you - even her coat looks richer! What a lucky girl to get to live in YOUR furever home!!

BTW, I'm with Houndstooth. I'd buy a calendar of your photographs in a heartbeat. Just sayin'. The snow on the leaves in the different colors...wow.

  4. Your leaves with snow, perfect!! And Shyla is so enjoying it all, down here in NZ ,in the far south, snow flurries and we are well into spring.Lambing is almost over, so all sheep farmers can be so thankful there was no huge fall like last year at the very start of lambing.Greetings from Jean

  5. Oooo! The snow and brilliant leaf pictures! I'm begging you to make a calendar! Begging!

I wished so hard for snow last year when Kuster was little, and we only had one or two snowfalls where there was anything on the ground. I was so disappointed! This year he'll probably knock me on my butt on a nearly daily basis.

I have to ask! Is Shyla wearing a Cycle Dog collar? Every time I see their site, I think of you. I don't know anybody they're better suited for. Anyway, if it is, I'd love to know how you like it!

  7. Now I am really torn. Like the moose in my area, I want your elk to be ok but I really want that mountain lion to have a little more meat on him/her. I guess I vote for nature to take care of itself and hunters to stay home. (I know, balance of nature and all that, but I really hate the hunting season)
Shyla looks so incredibly happy. I was comparing a picture of her when she first arrived and those in yesterdays photos. unbeleiveable difference. Yeah Shyla.....

  15. Shyla IS getting more beautiful each day, its a joy to see her blossoming! We have had a little no-stick snow but not our big one yet. I'd like a few more Indian Summer days first.

    I'd buy a calendar too.

  24. Hi KB. I love the term "zoomies"! Horses get it, too, in the colder weather. They love to rear and buck and run along plowing the snow with their noses. You have some fabulous photos here, and you're right - that mountain lion does look very hungry!

  25. Hi KB, You have such an amazing attitude towards the snow and being out in it. Just this morning, I had training with Hunter and I didn't have my winter coat on or gloves and I was freezing-you have so much more snow than we do. Glad you embraced it! Hugs to you and yours.

  29. Yet another fabulous portrait of Shyla with the golden leaves! I wished I didn't have to work that day; the snow on what remains of the flowers and leaves was so hard to leave behind and head for the city. I could have immortalized them with my camera!!!
